The global network emulator market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with projections showing the industry will reach $446.9 million by 2030, up from $287 million in 2024.
According to a market report from Research Insights, the market’s 7.7% compound annual growth rate is being driven by the accelerating rollout of 5G networks and the growing complexity of modern digital infrastructure.
Network emulators – tools like GNS3, EVE-NG, and Mininet that simulate real-world network conditions in controlled environments – are increasingly becoming essential as telecom operators grapple with 5G's complexity.
Unlike previous generations of mobile technology, 5G introduces advanced capabilities like network slicing and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) that require extensive testing before deployment.
Network emulators help to provide an effective safety net for operators, enabling them to validate how their networks will perform under conditions ranging from peak traffic to adverse conditions like extreme weather.
Software leading the charge
According to the report, software-based emulation platforms dominate the market, accounting for 53.9% of global revenue in 2023.
The report suggests that the software's market share is being accelerated by the integration of AI and machine learning capabilities into emulation tools, enabling more intelligent and automated testing scenarios.
“As digital infrastructure becomes more decentralized, software-defined, and disaggregated, the role of network emulators is emerging as an indispensable tool, fueling strong market demand,” the research firm said.
Cloud-based deployment options are also expanding, offering greater flexibility and remote accessibility, a boon for operators given that distributed teams are increasingly becoming the norm in enterprise IT.
Market players position for growth
North America was cited as the leading geography in the network emulator market, fueled by the region's already extensive technological infrastructure alongside a “surge in adoption” of 5G.
Critical sectors in North America, such as healthcare, finance, and defense, have all seen increased demand for network emulation solutions, according to the research.
The US’s startup ecosystem was also cited as a driving force behind network emulation adoption, with the report suggesting the market posed a “significant opportunity” for emerging software firms to capitalize on the growing demand for network testing capabilities.
Europe is gaining momentum as operators continue to pursue their digital transformation goals, while Asia Pacific is also showing a strong growth trajectory. China, Japan, and South Korea were listed as leading regional adopters through massive investments in smart city technologies and IoT infrastructure.
In terms of market players set to play a major role in network emulation over the rest of the decade, Research Insights highlighted Keysight Technologies, Spirent Communications, and VIAVI Solutions among those leading the pack.
Other emulator contenders identified by Research Insights include Apposite Technologies, Calnex Solutions, and Polaris Networks, alongside PacketStorm Communications, Aukua Systems, and InterWorking Labs.
“Network emulators are becoming increasingly critical tools for testing, validating, and optimizing the performance of network-dependent applications, hardware, and infrastructure under simulated real-world conditions without disrupting live systems,” the research firm said.
“As digital transformation initiatives gain momentum, the focus on cybersecurity, latency control, interoperability, and resilience are pushing emulation tools to support a wider range of protocols and dynamic topologies.”
