Five-year-old Vasona Networks, a mobile traffic management company, today announced a $14.6 million C round, bringing total funds raised to $48 million. Participants in today’s round include Bessemer Venture Partners, New Venture Partners, and NexStar Partners.
The San Jose, Calif.,-based company says its software is used by Tier-1 mobile network operators, including Telefónica UK.
The additional capital will support Vasona’s developments in mobile edge computing as part of the evolution to 5G.
“The main thing is what 5G exposed,” says Rui Frazao, Vasona’s CTO. “When 5G was coming out, we thought it was just another layer. Then last year everyone understood there’s a complete new architecture that is needed. We realized the new architecture is moving to the edge.”
Vasona is developing software, being trialed with some operators, that is deployed between the core and the radio access network to map the traffic and the users in real time. It determines the best traffic speeds to serve to smartphones. Mobile video traffic has been Vasona’s focus, but the company wants to use the underlying platform for other services besides video.
“We’re not talking about SDN yet,” says Frazao. “We’re not switching traffic flow. But we’re not just providing information. We’re suggesting how the content should be delivered."
Although Vasona is not doing software-defined networking, Frazao adds: "We’re not diverting traffic, but we now have that ability.”
