Microsoft announced general availability of a cloud-to-cloud migration tool for users adopting its Azure platform.

Azure Storage Mover is designed for Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers who want to move their data to Azure by specifically enabling direct transfers from the AWS S3 storage service to Azure Blob Storage.

The migration service supports direct parallel transfers, allowing server-to-server file migration optimized for handling large datasets efficiently.

The cloud giant added that users also can automate workflows and track jobs using the Azure portal or Azure Command-Line Interface (CLI), allowing file metadata to be preserved throughout the process without need for manual scripting or third-party tools.

Data transfers are also encrypted in transit and integrated with Azure’s security and compliance systems, such as Azure Active Directory, Multicloud Arc Connector, and role-based access control (RBAC).

After the initial migration, Azure Storage Mover can perform incremental sync operations, transferring only modified files to reduce downtime and maintain data consistency. Additionally, migration progress can be monitored through the Azure portal, CLI, or REST API, with integration into Azure Monitor and Log Analytics for detailed telemetry and error reporting.

With its announcement, Microsoft touted the potential of migrating AI training data into Azure Blob Storage, as well as a customer case study in public preview, claiming MSP firm Syncro had "migrated hundreds of terabytes from AWS S3 to Azure Blob with minimal downtime."

The release follows Microsoft's recent move to combine its Azure Marketplace and AppSource to create a consolidated storefront offering an array of enterprise software.

Microsoft’s Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) was also updated with a new “Automatic” option recently, designed to simplify the configuration, optimization, and usability of its Kubernetes-based AKS platform.

The firm also recently updated its Azure Container Storage platform to enable higher performance, lower latency, and improved resource efficiency for Kubernetes-based storage needs.
