Meta today added Cisco and Arista Networks to its decade-long push to open and share network infrastructure hardware designs via the Open Compute Project (OCP).

The company formerly known as Facebook also revealed a pair of new top-of-rack switches, 200-Gb/s and 400-Gb/s fabric switches, and the OCP Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI), which is a standard and open API for data center network hardware.

The pair of top-of-rack switches include the Wedge 400 that runs on Broadcom’s Tomahawk 3 ASIC and the Wedge 400C running on Cisco’s Silicon One. Cisco is Meta’s newest ASIC partner, and the Wedge 400C represents the first OCP contribution using Cisco’s latest chip.

The Wedge switches, which have been deployed in Meta’s data centers, feature a fourfold jump in switching capacity from the previous generation, up to 12.8 Tb/s, and a CPU subsystem that can be replaced in the field, according to Meta.

Meta’s data center fabrics have also improved from 100 Gb/s to the Minipack2 and the Arista 7388X5, both of which will support upgrades up to 400 Gb/s. Both of the fabric switches based on the Broadcom Tomahawk4 25.6-Tb/s switch ASIC, and the Arista 7388X5 adds a Credo chipset to the mix.

The fabric switches feature “significantly reduced power per bit compared with their previous models” and support 200G-FR4 QSFP56 optics modules, according to Meta. The Arista 7388X5 specifically targets hyperscale cloud scalability and supports multiple operating systems, including Arista EOS, Meta’s FBOSS network operating system, and SONiC.

Meta also noted that FBOSS, which previously relied on APIs provided by ASIC vendors, has been adapted to OCP SAI. This migration allows OCP to onboard ASICs from multiple vendors more quickly and provides engineers with a common platform, according to Meta.

Finally, Meta highlighted two areas of focus for the next decade. The company, working under the OCP umbrella, wants to develop an “open and standard die-to-die interface” for data center operators to integrate open chiplets into their facilities. Moreover, Meta claims it is dedicated to reach net zero emissions by 2030.
