Australian service provider Macquarie Telecom picked VeloCloud’s software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) technology to supplement its MPLS network that delivers its enterprise customers services, including voice, data, cloud, and security.

The provider will be offering the managed SD-WAN service to its Australian enterprise customers that have locations spread throughout the country and other parts of the world.

Specifically, VeloCloud’s SD-WAN will provide its customers with extra bandwidth and network control to remote and rural sites that have struggled to gain sufficient access to connectivity, which affects application performance, said Luke Clifton, group executive at Macquarie Telecom.

Australia is going through a national broadband network rollout where the government is trying to replace the country’s copper connectivity. The network is offered via wholesale to as many as 14 resellers. But the network is expensive. And for rural locations it can be difficult to access. On the flip side, the national network provides MPLS cheaper in Australia compared to the United States.

For SD-WAN, the cost of replacing MPLS with SD-WAN is not a selling point of the technology in Australia like it is in the U.S., Clifton said. However, the features and network control it offers is a selling point. But this has contributed to the slower adoption of SD-WAN in Australia.

Macquarie offering the VeloCloud appliance and is bundling it with a number of connectivity options including broadband, Ethernet, DSL, 4G, LTE, and MPLS. In addition, the provider will help configure and orchestrate policies to help customers prioritize certain applications.

Macquarie is looking to offer this service as an upsell to its existing MPLS customers and drive new revenue streams. The company has had the technology deployed for about six months and currently has about 83 customers connected to its MPLS and SD-WAN network.

Although Macquarie offers additional services like security, cloud offerings, and application suites, it hasn’t yet integrated those with the VeloCloud offering. But it expects to in the near future.
