Juniper Networks has validated a proof-of-concept (PoC) on a 5G backhaul for quantum-safe network security.
In collaboration with Istanbul-based operator Turkcell and Swiss quantum key crypto firm ID Quantique, the PoC saw the integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) with Juniper’s media access control security (MACsec) and internet protocol security (IPsec) frameworks.
The project focused on enabling quantum-resilient protection for critical mobile backhaul elements, including precision timing protocols (PTP) and encrypted data.
Turkcell validated MACsec and IPsec encryption using Juniper SRX Series Firewalls, MX, and ACX Series Routers, first with a virtual key management system (KMS), then with Clavis XG and Clarion KX delivering quantum-generated keys from ID Quantique.
The joint solution is claimed to have successfully preserved timing accuracy and IP traffic integrity, which are required for latency-sensitive 5G services.
With this sort of quantum-resilient protection, it is hoped Turkcell can provide long-term protection of sensitive data for its customers that require high-level security, such as those in government and financial services.
Raj Yavatkar, SVP and CTO at Juniper Networks, commented that the PoC sets "new benchmarks for secure communication."
"As the industry transitions toward quantum-resistant security measures, proactive initiatives like Turkcell’s serves as a model for others in the telecom sector,” Yavatkar added.
Turkcell CTO Vehbi Çağrı Güngör added: “With the trial of QKD integrating into our existing Juniper IPsec and MACsec security frameworks, we are laying the groundwork for a quantum-resilient infrastructure and preparing ourselves for future major cybersecurity challenges.”
