Juniper Networks' nine-year-old MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routing portfolio just got a refresh, primarily to boost throughput but also to add more automation and openness to outside vendors.

The MX Series edge routers are powered by Juniper’s Trio silicon and Junos software. Three new MX Series linecards — the MPC9, MPC8, and MPC7 — increase router throughput. The 400 Gb/s-ready MPC9 provides 1.6 Tb/s of throughput, enabling a single MX2020 to scale to 32 Tb/s. Additionally, the MPC7 doubles the performance and density of all currently installed MX240, MX480, and MX960 routers.

A new Juniper Extension Toolkit (JET), which uses open application programming interfaces (APIs), provides an avenue for developers to create third-party applications, such as provisioning and self-healing capabilities. These applications can reside on or off the MX2010 or MX2020 to interact with the network layer.

JET also supports OpenConfig, a configuration and management capability with customizable YANG data models for flexible vendor integration.

The MX Series now also features the Junos Telemetry Interface. It facilitates migrations to software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) by synchronizing operational states to external controllers. Real-time data correlation is made possible with technology from SevOne.
