Juniper Networks has hired well-known cloud computing executive Randy Bias as vice president of technology for its cloud software products.

Bias is charged with defining and leading Juniper’s cloud strategy. He will identify new products and partnerships and serve as an industry evangelist on these topics.

In addition, he will carry “Juniper’s vision to a variety of diverse cloud and open source communities in areas beyond traditional networking,” according to a Juniper corporate blog posting penned by Ankur Singla, VP of software-defined networking (SDN) and orchestration systems.

Bias, an outspoken and opinionated cloud expert, coined the phrase “pets versus cattle,” which is frequently used to explain how data center servers should be treated like anonymous cattle, not like pampered, individual pets.

He founded the OpenStack startup Cloudscaling years before the OpenStack Foundation was formed. He was elected as an inaugural director of the newly formed OpenStack Foundation in 2012, where he served until January 2016.

In 2014, Cloudscaling was acquired by EMC, and Bias served as VP of technology within EMC’s emerging technologies division, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Juniper says Bias has invaluable experience with enterprise customers, witnessing how they’re planning and deploying their cloud resources. And he’s an advocate for hyperscale clouds built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) running cloud-native apps.

It’s noteworthy that Bias’ hiring announcement was posted by Ankur Singla, who founded Contrail Systems, which was acquired by Juniper.

“Increasingly, our customers are not only demanding solutions for software-defined networking, but they’re now asking Juniper to help solve operational challenges and workload management in both telco cloud and enterprise hybrid cloud environments,” writes Singla. “We continue to aim towards solving these problems and ultimately these may lead our solutions — especially OpenContrail — in some exciting new directions.”
