Juniper Networks former Chief Technology Officer Bikash Koley is out, and the company hired Raj Yavatkar as the new CTO.
The networking company first announced Koley’s resignation in a Nov. 27 filing with the U.S. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. It said Koley would remain in his current role until Jan. 3, 2020.
Juniper today issued a press release that named Yavatkar as CTO and said he will begin his employment at Juniper this month. The press release, however, made no mention of Koley. Neither did an emailed statement sent to SDxCentral from a Juniper spokesperson: “Mr. Yavatkar is anticipated to join the Juniper team in December, and we look forward to his technical thought leadership and vision as he helps us lead the next era of innovation at Juniper,” it said.
In his role at Juniper, Yavatkar will report to CEO Rami Rahim.
Google Networking ConnectionYavatkar is currently an IEEE Fellow and previously headed the development of network virtualization infrastructure and products for cloud networking at Google. Prior to Google, Yavatkar held leadership roles at VMware and Intel.
Koley also joined Juniper from Google in 2017. The hire was quite a coup for the networking vendor, which, at the time had seen declining router and security business revenue over the past couple years and struggled to sell its technology strategy.
During his tenure with the cloud giant, Koley headed Google’s network architecture, engineering, and planning efforts, and boasts extensive expertise in SDN, packet and optical network integration, warehouse-scale computing, and large-scale data center interconnection. He designed Google’s production network infrastructure, spanning data center, backbones, optical, and the content edge. His team also oversaw Google’s SDN evolution.
After jumping ship for Juniper, he said his strategy was to “make the network simple” using automation and orchestration across a multicloud environment. “I’m going to go after one of the most complex problems of today, which is multicloud,” he said in an interview with SDxCentral.
Like his predecessor, Yavatkar will be tasked with advancing Juniper’s strategy of enabling highly automated, artificial intelligence-driven networks.
“In my career, I’ve always envisioned and improved upon how emerging technologies can be applied to creatively solve business problems ahead of the competition and have applied this knowledge to pioneer new product lines and cloud architectures,” Yavatkar said in a statement. “I look forward to joining the world-class team at Juniper and guiding their industry-leading portfolio of cloud networking solutions.”
