Cloud orchestration provider InterCloud Systems is using its existing orchestration platform to control, manage, and monitor software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) technologies and capabilities.

InterCloud doesn’t build SD-WAN technologies. However, it has created its NFVGrid platform that allows users to set policies and gain analytics on a variety of services in the data center.

InterCloud has partnered with a number of managed service providers (MSPs) and resellers to offer its NFVGrid to enterprises as a way to orchestrate and provide analytics to SD-WAN technologies, said Konstantine Babenko, VP of software development at InterCloud. Those SD-WAN technologies could come from a variety of vendors.

The company realizes that different companies might want different features from their SD-WAN solution whether it be WAN optimization, dynamic routing, QoS, security, or transport options. InterCloud’s platform allows for enterprises to mix and match these capabilities to build an SD-WAN system that fits into their existing environment, infrastructure, or customer premises equipment (CPE).

“We help users build a custom SD-WAN solution that can utilize different kinds of CPE, connectivity, or capabilities depending on their needs and allows us to create different kinds of scenarios,” Babenko said.

InterCloud’s NFVGrid has been on the market for about two years, and its ability to orchestrate and provide analytics to SD-WAN is just a new use case for the platform. InterCloud works with service providers to pair NFVGrid with whatever additional connected services an enterprise might need — whether it’s a complete solution from an SD-WAN vendor or additional WAN services in addition to what they might already have in place.

InterCloud’s platform uses machine learning and historical data loads to create a baseline of what normal network and application activity looks like. This baseline is constantly being adjusted based on what is happening within the network, and if it detects an abnormality, it will automatically send an alert.
