Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) President and CEO Antonio Neri three years ago during his company’s annual Discover conference committed to having the vendor's entire portfolio delivered as-a-service by the end of 2022. Today, at this year’s event, Neri “proudly” announced that the mission was completed.
“Thanks to the HPE GreenLake, I can proudly say we have achieved that goal,” Neri said during his keynote address. “We have been on what I call a journey to one by adopting an edge-to-cloud architecture. Today, we give you one platform, one experience from edge to cloud.”
HPE’s GreenLake platform now offers more than 70 cloud services across the enterprise computing stack, including the latest additions that the vendor announced during this year’s event. Those include GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, data fabric, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), block storage, disaster recovery, backup and recovery, compute operations management, and industry-vertical cloud services for customer engagement and payments.
Neri said the platform has received positive feedback, and “customers have voted with their workloads and data.” The vendor claims approximately 65,000 customers and 120,000 users are on the GreenLake platform, including Disney, Home Depot, Carestream Health, BMW Group, and National Security Agency, and it manages over one exabyte of data worldwide.
What Makes HPE GreenLake Unique?Neri explained that the GreenLake platform completes users’ hybrid cloud strategy by addressing their biggest data-first modernization challenges.
As competitors such as Cisco and Dell Technologies continue to push and expand their as-a-service portfolio, GreenLake’s differentiators land in the ability to bring the cloud operating experience to users’ data, and help them deploy the cloud anywhere, Neri said.
One of the services to achieve this is the GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, which brings a public cloud-like experience, supports the deployment of bare metal, virtual machines (VM)s, and container workloads, and optimizes the infrastructure for those workloads, according to Vishal Lall, SVP and GM of HPE GreenLake cloud services solutions.
As more data requires real-time processing at the edge, “you can create cloud-native private clouds so you can deploy adjacency to the public cloud as a part of hybrid environments and still allow your developers to use the public cloud services and deploy them to run on HPE GreenLake,” Neri added.
Another touted differentiation is sustainability. “Our biggest opportunity to have a positive impact on the planet is by enabling you to transform and modernize sustainably,” he said. “The move to the public cloud has been a key lever but sustainability moves reach all applications and data wherever they are, whether or not in multi-generational IT environments, hybrid clouds, and of course the edge.”
Neri also highlighted the predictability of the as-a-service model. GreenLake is a hybrid cloud platform that comes with a shared-risk model, which offers a precise service level consumption agreement, he said.
“With HPE GreenLake, you get your own modern cloud platform without the upfront investment so you can defy the entire operating experience and refocus your team's time on creating value that differentiates your business and not on the heavy lifting of the infrastructure,” he added.
More GreenLake PartnersHPE announced several new or extended GreenLake partnerships, including Red Hat, SUSE, and Evil Genius.
“As the world becomes more and more distributed, more than 70% of the data is outside the public cloud and more than 50% of that data is created at the edge,” Neri said. That’s why in 2018, HPE pledged to invest $4 billion in edge technologies and services over the next four years.
“By 2025 the world will have 150 billion connected devices, generating 175 zettabytes of data of which more than 3% of that data will need to be processed in real time,” he added. “Managing complexity at this scale for our customers is another strength of the platform.”
