Bret Taylor Steps Down as co-CEO of Salesforce

Bret Taylor announced he is leaving Salesforce, marking a second time that founder Marc Benioff has lost a co-CEO in less than three years. Taylor's unexpected departure comes one year after he was promoted to the co-CEO role after serving as as president and COO at the company.

“After a lot of reflection, I’ve decided to return to my entrepreneurial roots,” Taylor said in a statement. “Salesforce has never been more relevant to customers, and with its best-in-class management team and the company executing on all cylinders, now is the right time for me to step away.”

The announcement came just after Salesforce disclosed better-than-expected fiscal third-quarter results. But the company’s shares have fallen around 40% since the start of this year, and its stock was down as much as 6% in after-hours trading, according to CNBC.

In fact, one of the company’s smaller employee resource groups (ERGs), the Native American Network (NAN), has gained significant momentum in recent years.
