Google, Microsoft, and Intel grabbed the top three spots on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) latest Green Power Partnership National Top 100 list.

The EPA defines green power as renewable energy sources that are naturally replenishing (like solar, wind, or geothermal energy) and produce electricity with zero anthropogenic, or human-caused, emissions. The list ranks companies that partner with the EPA based on each company’s annual green power usage, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). The agency’s rankings also provide additional metrics such as the percentage of total power used that comes from renewable energy and the types of renewable power sources used.

The EPA’s Top 100 green power partnership organizations ‒‒ including universities, local governments, retail, and tech/telecom ‒‒ last year used 70.6 billion kWh of green power, a number that equals the annual electricity use of more than 6.6 million American households.

Google (No. 1) used 7.9 billion kWh of solar and wind power, accounting for 93% of its total electricity consumption. Microsoft (No. 2) harnessed small-hydro, wind, and solar power resources to account for 100% of its 6.7 billion kWh of electricity use. Intel (No. 3) used various renewable energy resources to produce 100% of its 5 billion kWh of electricity.

More notable technology companies on the list include Equinix (No. 6), Cisco (No. 16), Digital Realty (No. 24), Salesforce (No. 42), Dell Technologies (No. 46), IBM (No. 74), and SAP America (No. 81).

Although fewer of the main telecommunication operators appear on the list, the ones that do sit toward the top: AT&T is ranked No. 7, and T-Mobile is at No. 10.

Top 30 Tech and Telecom

In addition to its National Top 100 list, the EPA ranked its partners within specific industries. Google, Microsoft, and Intel once again snagged the top three spots in the EPA’s Top 30 Tech and Telecom rankings.

Equinix secured fourth place on the more specific list, and Cisco landed in ninth. Other providers in the top 30 include Salesforce (No. 14), Dell Technologies (No. 15), IBM (No. 18), SAP America (No. 19), and VMware (No. 23).

This continuity shows the renewable energy success of these companies within the tech industry as well as in a broader context ‒‒ not only do Google, Microsoft, and Intel use more renewable energy than other EPA partners in the tech space, but they also use more renewable energy than EPA partners in other industries.

On the top 30 list, AT&T (No. 5) ranked the highest among telecom operators that partner with the EPA, and T-Mobile followed closely in the No. 7 slot as the second and final operator on the list.

The EPA also provides data on its partners that use 100% green power. Microsoft, Intel, Equinix, and Cisco appear near the top of this list, highlighting the desire of energy-guzzling cloud providers to use renewable energy.
