As a company focused on environmental responsibility, Globe participated in GSMA Intelligence's Green Network Index (GNI) study, which aims to establish benchmarks for network sustainability.

Globe is one of six telecom companies globally involved in this project, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability through research that supports greener networks and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, stated, “We recognize the importance of collaboration in shaping a more sustainable telecom sector. Our contribution to the GNI study reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices that strengthen both our industry and our journey toward Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions.”

Apple Evangelista, Globe's Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, noted, “Through the GNI, we are gaining valuable insights that will help us refine our approach to energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and overall network sustainability.”

Support for greener telecom networks is increasing globally, with 70% of telecom operators aligning their commitments with the Science-based targets initiative (SBTI) to lower GHG emissions.

This trend is influenced by rising energy costs, which contribute significantly to a telco's operational expenses, highlighting the need for greater energy efficiency. Additionally, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting has become more prominent among analysts, prompting the need for standardized metrics to assess sustainability.

In response, GSMAi developed the GNI, consolidating various factors into a comprehensive index that enhances comparability across telecom operators and guides companies in their sustainability efforts.

Tim Hatt, Head of Research at GSMA Intelligence, remarked, “Tracking progress on mobile network operators' energy sustainability is critical in driving meaningful change. Our Green Network Index helps operators to achieve that goal by enabling them to make informed decisions that support a greener, more sustainable future.”

The GNI expands on GSMAi's prior energy efficiency analysis, creating a system-wide index that considers energy and carbon efficiency, renewable energy usage, and overall performance.

By supporting GSMAi’s sustainability initiatives, Globe promotes positive changes in the telecom industry.
