Just one year after GE Digital announced it was expanding its Predix Internet of Things (IoT) platform to the edge, the company is adding more edge capabilities and introducing a private cloud.

The company admits that IoT complexity is still preventing many companies from moving beyond the pilot stage with their IoT programs and into full commercial deployment. To that end, it is working on capabilities that will help streamline IoT deployments and make companies more confident in the Predix platform.

The new Predix Edge capabilities include adding analytics that will securely capture, process, and analyze data at the edge and also manage that data locally. It also added support for data storage in remote environments when the Predix platform is offline or only has intermittent connectivity.

And GE said it has also added a device management solution that allows enterprises to not only track their IoT devices but also manage the software on the device.

There are several companies that say they specialize in IoT device management, but GE Digital says that what makes its device management different from competitors is that it provides end-to-end application management. Joe Nichols, COO and vice president of product strategy at GE Digital, said that GE Digital is working with specialized applications at the edge that are for certain devices. “We believe we need to not only manage the device but also the software that our partners are producing,” he explained.

As part of its goal to simplify the IoT experience, GE Digital is introducing a Predix Public Cloud, which is an on-premises cloud platform that makes it possible for companies to host their Predix applications or custom applications on premises instead of using a public cloud.  Nichols said that the Predix Private Cloud is a good option for companies that have data that they don’t want to put in a public cloud but still want to run Predix applications. “This allows customers to deploy Predix in a private cloud and run the apps natively in a private cloud environment,” he said.
