Fortinet extended its cloud security service offerings into Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a push that is similar to one made by the vendor toward Microsoft's Azure platform last month.

For AWS, Fortinet is integrating its FortiGate-VM with the recently released AWS CloudFormation third-party resource provider framework. This will permit Fortinet-managed rulesets for AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF). It's also designed to simplify manual configuration modifications like automating security policies, admin users, network routing, and other cloud security operations.

Fortinet's FortiWeb Cloud WAF-as-a-service product has been available on AWS since June. Lior Cohen, senior director of cloud security products at Fortinet, explained in an email to SDxCentral that specific to this announcement, “Fortinet is offering a ruleset based on the new AWS WAF API version two for more granular web application security for AWS workloads.”

Customers can now use that outlet to activate and automatically provision the cloud-based WAF product. The as-a-service model also lowers the security skills needed to manage the platform.

The CloudFormation integration comes just shy of a month after Fortinet announced enriched ties into Microsoft’s Azure platform to provide a consistent operational security model for customers running applications on Azure.

While the services themselves are not new, the new compatibility and commitment is. “Fortinet is further underscoring its commitment to support a variety of customer use cases and requirements when securing their AWS-based workloads," Cohen noted.

He added that whereas the Microsoft integrations were tailored to Azure programs such as Azure Virtual WAN and SaaS, “Fortinet’s deeper integrations with AWS are in other areas tying Fortinet capabilities deeper into the AWS operational model and enabling users to integrate security into their AWS application lifecycle more natively."

Foritnet is also now supporting AWS' VPC Ingress Routing that is aimed at helping the construction and management of large-scale deployments in the Fortinet Cloud Security Services Hub. 

The Cloud Security Services include the FortiGate-VM next-generation firewall, FortiWeb-VM, and FortiMail-VM, which enable programmatic and selective inbound traffic routing and distribution that also remove routing workarounds and network address translation schemes.

FortiGate is the firm’s next-generation firewall appliance, which is what it offers its SD-WAN features through. The vendor began selling SD-WAN directly to its customers (through this appliance) last year.
