Fortinet today purchased ZoneFox, a privately-held, cybersecurity software company headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ZoneFox had raised $7.92 million and employed about 30 people at the end of 2017, according to the startup. ZoneFox provides security systems that combat insider threats to businesses. The company’s software enables organizations to see where business-critical data is going, who is accessing it, and who is doing things with it that they shouldn’t be – either accidentally or maliciously. ZoneFox says its insight comes from both on and off the corporate network, without impacting endpoints and user privacy.

The startup’s software captures data around five core factors - user, device, resource, process, and behavior. And it includes machine learning capabilities to distill billions of events per day into threat leads.

Fortinet says the acquisition will enhance its Fortinet Security Fabric and strengthen its existing endpoint and security information and event management (SIEM) business by providing customers with deeper visibility into endpoints and associated data flow and user behavior, both on and off the network.

Fortinet expects that the new endpoint security capabilities provided by ZoneFox will allow enterprises to better leverage machine learning to detect anomalous behavior and provide a faster response to insider threats.
