BOSTON — eBay is a big OpenStack user, and Suneet Nandwani, eBay’s senior director of cloud infrastructure and platforms, provided some statistics on the company’s use of OpenStack.

Speaking at the OpenStack Summit in Boston, Nandwani said, “In 2012 we started a transformation; we went to an internal cloud and doubled down on OpenStack at that time.”

Now, 95 percent of all Ebay traffic runs on its OpenStack cloud, which manages 167,000 virtual machines (VMs) and 4,000 applications.

In 2015, the company started looking at using Kubernetes to manage large-scale Docker container clusters. “I’d say we’re at the very beginning of the journey,” said Nandwani.

Although OpenStack is known for running VMs, it’s also gotten into running containers on top of VMs.

“Our Kubernetes is powered by OpenStack right now,” said Nandwani. Currently, Kubernetes at eBay runs 22,000 cores and 178 applications.

He said eBay suffered “a lot of bumps and bruises along the way” with OpenStack. But it’s taking those same learnings and applying them to its use of Kubernetes. It calls its internal version of Kubernetes “Tess.IO.”

And eBay has developed its own management platform for Kubernetes running on OpenStack. It’s a full lifecycle test process for containers called TessMaster. It helps the company manage Kubernetes across multiple providers.

“We took a lot of Kubernetes’ principles and used them to create TessMaster: It’s state aware, self-healing, and closed-loop,” said Nandwani. “TessMaster runs on Kubernetes to run Kubernetes.”
