Cloud services provider DigitalOcean today added scalable object storage to its product lineup.

The company already offers software-defined block storage. But object storage has been “one of the most requested products that we’ve been asked to build,” according to a blog post.

“Object storage is most commonly used for storing web assets — files and logos and the like,” explained Shiven Ramji, VP of product at DigitalOcean. “If you are a developer and you are building either a small website or a scalable application that will run in the cloud, accessing this [data] becomes a very important part of the application stack.”

Object storage manages data as objects, as opposed to files or blocks, and is typically used in the cloud. It is ideal for unstructured data such as media and web content.

As with all of the company’s products, Spaces, the new software-defined storage offering, targets developers. Developers can manage all of their data from the Spaces user interface (UI), and upload multiple files via drag-and-drop. It scales automatically, which means users don’t have to increase storage infrastructure as their application data grows.

“This solution applies the same principles we did with our initial offering,” Ramji said. “We try to simplify the user experience and also simplify the cost and pricing structure.”

He’s talking about Droplet for compute. DigitalOcean has been on a product-launching roll over the past 18 months. Spaces is its seventh product launch in 18 months. Others include a cloud firewall service, a monitoring service, and expanding its block storage into new regions.

With the new object storage product, DigitalOcean offers an entire software stack for application developers, Ramji said. “If you are a developer working within the DigitalOcean ecosystem, you now have all the products and features that are required for you to build and host any scalable application.”
