LAS VEGAS — To paraphrase Madonna and Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, we are living in a multicloud world and VMware is a multicloud girl, err, company.
“It is definitely a multicloud world,” said Dell at a VMworld 2017 press conference today alongside VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger. Dell Technologies owns a majority stake in VMware following Dell’s EMC acquisition last year.
“Cloud is an operating model and it exists in many different forms,” Dell said. “The beauty of what VMware is doing is connecting all of this together with cross-cloud services and NSX and deeply thinking about security. It is very forward-thinking in terms of how computing is evolving.”
Edge computing and its related use cases will be a further boost to multicloud environments, he added. “That will require a new computing mode, a new kind of cloud.”
To this end VMware has branded all of its private and public cloud services as VMware Cloud Services. It launched several new cloud services today including a security product AppDefense and VMware Cloud on AWS, which allows VMware customers to run workloads in the public cloud using the same VMware software stack.
Customers are investing in public clouds as well as on-premise data centers, Gelsinger said. Being able to help them bridge the two environments and providing hybrid-cloud management is a growing business opportunity.
“It really is both [public and private cloud] and how do we bring those two worlds together,” he said. “We see things like multicloud and cross-cloud management being growing opportunities.”
Dell also fielded questions about VMware AppDefense. He said its position in the VMware software stack — AppDefense leverages vSphere compute — and its integration with third-party security software should help customers address the overwhelming number of security products and approaches in the market.
“What I’ve heard from customers is a deep frustration,” he said. “[They say] ‘In applications I have two or three partners, infrastructure two or three partners. In security I’ve got 75 partners.’ The seams between all these different partners creates all kinds of problems and challenges. AppDefense, really building this into the hypervisor in a deep and thoughtful way, is exactly the kind of solution that’s needed.”
