Datadog announced today it is expanding its Amazon Web Services (AWS) support to include AWS Lambda, enabling customers to view metrics related to their serverless applications.

AWS Lambda takes advantage of serverless architecture, removing developers’ need to manage their servers in order to execute code and applications, and often saving their companies money, says Daniel Langer, product manager with Datadog. AWS Lambda allows its users to deploy, maintain, and scale microservices without the need to manage and scale server infrastructure.

Lambda functions can be triggered by an API, in-app actions, or AWS events.

“The traditional model is that you set up and run virtual machines that’re going to handle workloads of your organization, which requires setup and payment for however long it runs,” Langer says. “With Lambda you upload a piece of code and set up triggers that trigger the code to execute, and you only pay when the code is executed.”

This way users don’t have to worry about provisioning and they only pay for what they use. With Datadog’s integration, users can monitor Lambda functions and collect metrics to create visualizations and alerts from the rest of the infrastructure’s environment.

“With a serverless architecture, all you care about is your code — a lot less maintenance and more time spent on writing great code,” Langer says.

Datadog’s latest integration is one of 18 Amazon integrations including AWS CloudTrail, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Kinesis, and AWS Storage Gateway to name some.
