Meta announced that machine learning (ML) software project PyTorch has been transitioned to the Linux Foundation. As of August 2022, PyTorch was in the top 5 fastest growing open source software communities in the world, alongside the Linux kernel and Kubernetes.

Under the Linux Foundation umbrella the independent PyTorch Foundation will "democratize state-of-the-art tools, libraries, and other components to make these innovations accessible to everyone," according to a Meta announcement. Since Meta created PyTorch six years ago, around 2,400 contributors have built more than 150,000 projects on the framework.

In a separate announcement, the Linux Foundation said PyTorch is "one of the most important foundational platforms for development, testing and deployment of AI/ML and Deep Learning applications." The Linux Foundation already hosts and works with many projects that either contribute directly to foundational AI/ML projects or contribute to their use cases, such as LF Networking, AGL, Delta Lake, RISC-V, CNCF, and Hyperledger.
