Cloudify, a business unit of GigaSpaces, today released an updated version of its open source multicloud management software that the company says will better address the needs of IT managers and developers. That includes both casual application developers and what the company calls “power users.”
Cloudify 4 also focuses on model-driven design — an important feature as the company continues to support the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) project (Cloudify is a founding member of ONAP) and strengthen its network functions virtualization (NFV) management and network orchestration (MANO) offerings for telcos.
It follows the company’s hiring of Michael Brenner as chief architect for NFV in August 2016.
Similar to an earlier version launched in July 2016, the updated multicloud management software includes two product lines, one for enterprises and one for service providers.
Cloudify 4, which uses the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA), aims to address the needs of developers and central IT. It also expands the number of potential users to include power users, as well as developers who prefer platform-as-a-service (PaaS)-like features such a one-click portal and integration with CI/CD processes, the company said.
In an email, Cloudify CTO and founder Nati Shalom explained power users as “developers who need greater control over the underlying infrastructure resources than is the case with more casual application developers. Power users need more powerful automation, monitoring, and high availability to meet more stringent SLAs or QoS requirements.”
As container support becomes increasingly important to cloud management platform customers, Cloudify 4 includes built-in support for container frameworks like Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes and Mesos for infrastructure automation, service orchestration, and hybrid stack support. It also supports common microservices architectures through a model-driven approach in which microservices are modeled as a self-managed service.
In a feature that Cloudify says will appeal to power users, the new version’s model-driven design provides RESTful API access to resources exposed in the cloud management system, from the infrastructure resources to the monitoring system—north and southbound, as well as east and west.
It also provides new monitoring and analytics via a customizable portal, which Cloudify said helps address the needs of business unit users and IT operations. It enhances security via SSL-based communications among multicloud environments, the company said.
