Cisco expanded its SD-WAN reach into Comcast Business, signing a deal to add its Viptela platform to Comcast Business’ managed SD-WAN option sheet.

The agreement allows Comcast Business customers to layer the Viptela offering on top of their existing infrastructure or Comcast Business service. The cloud-delivered Viptela service includes cloud optimization, security, and analytics features that can support microsegmentation, identity-based policy management, end-to-end network performance visibility, and integrates 4G LTE and 5G cellular connectivity.

The deal also adds Cisco’s more robust Viptela option to Comcast Business’ already offered Cisco Meraki SD-WAN service.

Cisco last year signed a deal to provide its Meraki VPN gateways for deployment by Comcast Business into the employee homes of its customers as part of its Teleworker VPN program. That pandemic-fueled agreement was directed at companies already using Cisco’s Meraki wireless, LAN switching, and SD-WAN products in their branch offices.

“The expansion of our strategic partnership with Cisco to include Cisco SD-WAN allows us to offer our enterprise customers a broad portfolio of secure network solutions aligned to their unique needs and infrastructure requirements,” Amit Verma, VP for solutions engineering and technology at Comcast Business, explained in a statement tied to the Viptela expansion.

Viptela is Cisco’s more fully featured SD-WAN service, supporting more data paths, NFV, and secure access service edge (SASE) services. Cisco has been busy updating the depth and breadth of its SD-WAN offerings.

The vendor earlier this year updated its platform with monitoring software to boost the performance of its WebEx video conferencing service. The update also included a new dashboard designed to make it easier to integrate Cisco’s SD-WAN with the vendor’s Umbrella cloud security platform, expediting the processes of deploying a secure access service edge (SASE) architecture.

Comcast’s SD-WAN Moves

Comcast Business also offers a SASE architecture that uses a combination of Versa’s SD-WAN and Palo Alto Networks’ Prisma Access cloud security platform.

Comcast’s recently acquired Masergy division earlier this week struck a partnership and distribution deal with Fortinet and Ingram Micro to offer a packaged SD-WAN platform to resellers and managed service providers (MSPs).

Masergy is providing SD-WAN services from its Guardian Portfolio that allows those sales partners to offer either a Masergy fully managed service or a co-managed service that allows the reseller or MSP to take on tier-one and tier-two client support. This is also Masergy’s first time to offer its managed SD-WAN service through a distribution channel.
