Cisco today deepened its ties with Amazon Web Services (AWS) announcing three new integrations aimed at helping campus, branch, and data center customers more easily secure, automate, and manage their connections to the cloud giant's services.
“Our goal is to make it more straightforward for you to deploy new apps on hybrid networks, to make apps more manageable using the Cisco network tools you already have, and to save your business money in the process,” wrote Sachin Gupta, SVP of product management at Cisco, in a blog post.
The first of the company's integrations pairs Cisco's SD-WAN platform with AWS Transit Gateway. The integration allows customers to apply network segmentation or security policies seamlessly across the two platforms directly from Cisco's vManage SD-WAN controller. This will also allow customers to manage their network devices whether or not they are located on-premises or in the cloud.
Cisco recently reported that 20,000 customers were use its SD-WAN technology, including 70% of the Fortune 100 as of August.
OutPosts SupportCisco's new AWS integrations also extends into the data center with support for AWS Outposts, Amazon's on-premises service designed for applications that are latency sensitive or require local data processing. The integration builds on work earlier this year, which put Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) Anywhere data center networking platform on AWS.
“Our customers can use Cisco's policy-driven automation controller ... to translate their business intent and policy models into consistent on-premises and cloud-native constructs that are deployed across AWS applications,” Gupta wrote. He explained that the integration should reduce complexity and costs by allowing customers to manage, configure, and monitor these services from a single portal.
Cisco earlier this year pushed its ACI Anywhere SDN platform into AWS and Microsoft Azure public clouds as part of its new “data center anywhere” strategy. The move was similar to VMware’s “NSX everywhere” push, which was aimed at stretching that vendor’s networking and security capabilities from data centers to clouds and the edge.
Cisco Supports AWS SecurityCisco also rolled out support for AWS security group management to its Cloud Defense Orchestrator and introduced ACI policy-based automation for services insertion to the AWS VPC Ingress Routing.
According to Gupta, AWS VPC Ingress Routing will allow customers to apply security policy to cloud applications with greater granularity, making the intrusion prevention, malware detection, and content security features of Cisco's next-generation firewalls more precise.
