Vietnam-based network operator FPT Telecom today tapped Ciena’s coherent optics to power its modernization efforts.

Founded in 1997, FPT is one of the largest telecommunications operators in Vietnam with infrastructure spanning 59 of the country’s 63 provinces and cities and 46 offices spread across 22 countries and territories.

The deal will see Ciena deploy several technologies to address growing bandwidth demands driven by entertainment and and IoT across the nation. FPT plans to deploy Ciena’s 6500 series packet-optical platform, which is based on its WaveLogic Ai coherent optics.

“Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai doubles wavelength throughput speeds versus 100 Gb/s or 200 Gb/s solutions, resulting in increased network capacity as well as a reduction in space, power, and cost per bit,” said Helen Xenos, senior director of portfolio marketing at Ciena, in an email to SDxCentral.

Using Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai will allow FPT Telecom to optimize the capacity of its network across any path from 100 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s in 50 Gb/s increments, she explained.

In addition to helping bolster the network operator's overall capacity, the platform will also provide real-time link performance metrics, thus enabling FPT to better optimize that capacity and squeeze out operational efficiencies, the vendor claims.

Beyond Ciena’s coherent optics, FPT plans to deploy the company’s Manage, Control, and Plan (MCP) domain controller. Ciena claims MCP will help to automate the deployment process, eliminating the need for time consuming and often tedious configurations.

Finally, FPT will deploy Ciena’s Blue Planet Routing Optimization and Analysis platform, which provides visibility and analysis across multiple domains.

Today’s news comes just weeks after Ciena announced a string of new contract wins, largely on the back of its coherent optics and Blue Planet-based network monitoring and automation services.

These included deployments of Ciena’s 800 Gb/s-capable WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent optics on Brazil-based Vogel Telecom and India-based Lightstorm Telecom Ventures networks.

Consolidated Communications also tapped Ciena to modernize its wireline network to support emerging 5G services and applications using the vendor’s Adaptive IP platform.
