Chuck Robbins has officially taken the CEO mantle at Cisco, and on Monday named two new outside hires to his executive team.

Kevin Brandy of Salesforce.com joins Cisco in the newly created role of chief digital officer (CDO), in which he will work across teams to define the company's "next generation digital strategy," Robbins wrote in a company blog post.

Also hired is Khosla Ventures partner Zorawar Biri Singh, who joins as CTO of platforms and solutions.

The two outside hires join a reshuffled executive team under Robbins, who was announced as former Cisco CEO John Chambers' replacement in May. Presidents Rob Lloyd and Gary Moore — both previously considered contenders for the top job after Chambers — left Cisco effective last Friday.

The new CDO title, which sounds as redundant at Cisco as CTO does, comes amid rising popularity for the role, with Gartner predicting that 25% of companies would have a CDO by the end of this year.

"In the digital world, data – and the insights from that data – will be the most strategic asset," Robbins wrote Monday. "It will be distributed across every part of our customers’ organizations and ecosystems."
