Celestica debuted the DS6005 co-packaged optics (CPO) infused network switch it claims can slash power consumption while boosting efficiency for AI clusters.
Showcased at this week's OCP event in San Jose, California, the 64-port DS6005 is designed for both scale-up and scale-out networking, boasting up to 102.4 Tb/s of switching capacity.
Under the hood is Broadcom’s Tomahawk 6 silicon with optical engines integrated directly onto the switch application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). It’s fully liquid-cooled and is compliant with the software for the open networking in the cloud (SONiC) standard.
“AI infrastructure is driving unprecedented demand for bandwidth, while power, thermal management, latency, and reach are becoming increasingly important constraints,” Gavin Cato, SVP and GM for Celestica’s portfolio solutions and AI platform engineering, noted. “The DS6005 brings co-packaged optics, liquid cooling, field-replaceable external laser modules, and CPO-aware software management together in a compact platform designed to help customers build scalable and power-efficient AI fabrics.”
Celestica’s DS6005 joins a steadily growing list of vendors offering CPO switches, with optical connectivity touted as the means to boost AI data center network bandwidth while significantly reducing power consumption.
Nvidia has already debuted its Spectrum-6 SN6800 offering for the growing market, while Broadcom has been building out its own CPO switch chips, culminating in the Tomahawk 6 Davisson (more formally the BCM78919) found inside Celestica’s DS6005.
Celestica joins the crowd, having recently signed on to support a Lightmatter-led effort to develop open specifications for CPO. Joined by vendors including Keysight and Qualcomm, the Open Silicon Photonics for AI Systems initiative aims to create frameworks for CPOs that support AI clusters ranging from 72 to more than 1,000 nodes.
“Moving co-packaged optics from an advanced architecture to a production-ready system requires collaboration across silicon, optical engines, packaging, thermal design, manufacturing, and system integration," Manish Mehta, VP for marketing and operations in Broadcom’s Optical Systems Division, noted. "By combining Broadcom’s Tomahawk 6 – Davisson platform and optical expertise with Celestica’s system engineering and platform execution, the DS6005 demonstrates how our partnership is helping bring CPO to market for AI networking."
