Broadcom secured the rights to supply networking components for use in Google’s next-generation AI racks.
A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reveals the semiconductor giant secured a "Supply Assurance Agreement" to supply networking, along with “other components,” through 2031. Broadcom also signed on to develop and supply Google’s custom tensor processing unit (TPU) silicon line.
No financial terms were disclosed.
Google has long worked with Broadcom on its TPU design, with Broadcom CEO Hock Tan bullish on the latter’s strong growth from customers adopting its platform.
The SEC filing also revealed a separate deal to codevelop hardware to be used by Anthropic, the AI lab behind Claude, which Google and hyperscale rival Amazon Web Services (AWS) have a stake in. Anthropic signed on for a whopping 3.5 gigawatts of TPUs, which the filing states it will have access to beginning in 2027.
Anthropic had already signed up for one-gigawatt of TPU compute, with the startup confirmed to have been the mystery customer behind a $10 billion custom-chip deal – after previous fingers pointed at OpenAI.
“The consumption of such expanded AI compute capacity by Anthropic is dependent on Anthropic’s continued commercial success,” Broadcom’s filing regarding this latest deal reads. “In connection with this deployment, the parties are in discussions with certain operational and financial partners."
Despite Broadcom’s deal, the eighth-generation of Google’s TPU line will contain technology from MediaTek. Having already secured orders for "v7e" iterations of Ironwood, the Taiwanese firm’s role in the creation of the hyperscaler’s next-generation custom silicon will see it create optimized iterations specifically for inference.
MediaTek's TPUv8x, which is being developed under the codename "Zebrafish," will see the firm support packaging efforts. However, DigiTimes Asia reports that Google has requested further engineering changes for its eighth-generation TPUs, which may push back production plans. Tape-out (the final design stage before manufacturing) for Zebrafish was expected around mid-2026.
