Broadcom today unveiled a new family of power-efficient and high-density optical line termination (OLT) devices that promise to speed the adoption of 10G passive optical networks (PON).
The oh so flamboyantly named BCM68650 packs up to 16 PON interfaces in your choice of three flavors: XGS-PON, NG-PON2, and 10GEPON. Broadcom's OLT devices also support multi-PON networks and allow for a mix of 1G, 2.5G and 10G PON connections.
Broadcom claims the technology is the "ideal platform" for broadband equipment suppliers building out new 10G OLT systems.
As telecoms continue to deploy faster broadband to homes and businesses, Broadcom sees the ability to match the density of existing GPON deployments as a critical step toward driving mass adoption of 10G PON.
“The BCM68650 showcases Broadcom’s industry-leading commitment to investment in the newest fiber broadband infrastructure," said Greg Fischer, senior vice president and general manager of the Broadband Carrier Access Products Division at Broadcom, in a statement.
Fischer expects the company's latest OLT appliances to make a "dramatic impact" on the deployment of 10G fiber broadband in the near term.
Shipping alongside Broadcom's new hardware is its latest OLT line card development suite, Broadband Adaptive Layer. The environment is designed to provide customers with a standards-based programming interface and data model of the PON network.
Broadcom is currently shipping samples of the BCM68650 platform to select customers.
