Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it will open cloud data centers in Spain in late 2022 or early 2023.

The new AWS Europe (Spain) Region will include three availability zones at launch, and it will be AWS’s seventh region in Europe. The cloud giant already has regions in Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm, and will launch a new Milan region launching in early 2020.  AWS provides 69 availability zones across 22 infrastructure regions worldwide.

In addition to Spain, AWS plans to build 13 more availability zones and three more regions in Indonesia, Italy, and South Africa.

AWS Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr in a blog post said developers in Madrid and Barcelona are using AWS to build applications that span retail management, entertainment, analytics for online advertising, investment recommendations, and social scoring.

“Several of the companies were born-in-the-cloud startups; all made heavy use of the entire line of AWS database services (Amazon Redshift was mentioned frequently), along with AWS Lambda and AWS CloudFormation.” Barr wrote. “Some were building for the domestic market and others for the global market, but I am confident that they will all be able to benefit from this new region.”

AWS already has two edge locations and two offices in Madrid as well as an office in Barcelona.

The new Spanish data center announcement follows Amazon’s third-quarter 2019 earnings call last week during which the company reported its third consecutive quarter of declining cloud growth. However, Amazon still holds about 40% of the worldwide public cloud market share, which is more than the next three cloud providers — Microsoft, Google, and Alibaba — combined.
