Container security startup Scalock has released its security platform to general availability and changed its name to Aqua Security Software.

The name change doesn't signify a major new direction. It's simply because the security industry has "way too many ‘locks’, ‘cybers’, ‘shields’ and ‘safes,’ " said VP of Marketing Rani Osnat in a blog posting today.

The Aqua Container Security Platform, which supports containers from Docker, CoreOS, Microsoft, and VMware, tracks a container's status throughout its lifecycle. In addition to checking for vulnerabilities and policy compliance, Aqua also monitors containers while they're running, making sure their behavior stays within policy boundaries.

There's some similarity here to Twistlock, which likewise keeps watch over containers. Due to containers' ephemeral nature, this continual monitoring ability was absent from earlier container environments, both startups say.

Aqua has been in beta with "more than a dozen" enterprise customers, the company's press release claims.

Based in San Francisco with an office in Ramat Gan, Israel, Aqua was founded early last year by CEO Dror Davidoff (previously of Intel Security) and CTO Amir Jerbi, the former chief architect of CA Technologies’ security business unit.

Aqua raised a $4 million Series A last year from TLV Partners in Israel.
