Application delivery company Apcela recently closed a round of funding from existing investor and private equity firm Claritas Capital. Details of the round were not disclosed. Additionally, Jack Dziak was named president and COO. Founder Mark Casey remains at the company as CEO.
Apcela’s core product is AppHUB, a low-latency application delivery platform based on a distributed edge infrastructure. It uses software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) technology to bridge legacy premises-based IT and cloud environments and migrating enterprise WAN to an edge infrastructure that delivers performance and security for applications.
AppHUB runs as a service overlay on the software layer of SD-WANs. Apcela works with SD-WAN vendors such as Cisco and Versa to provide the added capabilities. It ingests information that the network is generating as applications run. And it creates a set of logarithms, algorithms, and rules that can effectively predict application performance on network elements or on particular connections.
“Enterprises are distributing their IT; they’re distributing their applications; but one element that lags behind is infrastructure [data center, compute, network, storage],” said Dziak. “Our delivery capability enables the ability to distribute those rules, policies, and functionalities out to the edge and does so in a manner where the network doesn’t become a hindrance in doing so.”
New Markets and LeadershipIn the past few years, Apcela has changed names and shifted focus toward the enterprise market.
Apcela began as CFN Services and developed a network for the shortest and lowest-latency paths between financial exchanges, bolstering more than 600,000 route miles of fiber and wireless assets. The company launched AppHUB originally as a platform for hybrid IT in 2012. But it layered SD-WAN into the platform and renamed itself Apcela in 2016.
Dziak joins Apcela to continue its enterprise push by furthering its product development, improving operations, building its sales and marketing, and working with more SD-WAN vendors to expand its offering. This most recent round of funding will be used for these purposes.
Dziak was a partner at Accenture from 1995 to 2003, and he has held positions in product management, solutions engineering, and financial management. Most recently he was the executive vice president of global products at SunGard, a production and recovery services company. He joined the Apcela board in June 2017.
He has worked with Casey, and Apcela, at many of his past business ventures for network discovery and re-architecturing projects.
