Amazon today said that it plans to create an additional 800 tech jobs in Austin, Texas. The company plans to hire in the fields of software and hardware engineering, research science, and cloud computing.
Austin has been one of Amazon’s 17 tech hubs since 2011. Each tech hub is a “network of development centers” that serve its Seattle and Northern Virginia headquarters. The Austin tech hub has employees for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon Business, Amazon Devices, video game design, and advertising.
The 800 jobs will be primarily housed within a new 145,000 square foot office.
The company claims to have invested more than $7 billion — through building fulfillment facilities, cloud infrastructure, and a wind farm as well as employee compensation. And it says it has created 22,000 full-time jobs in Texas since 2011, including 1,000 in just the last four years.
This comes a little over a month after the company canceled its plans to build a New York headquarters that would employ around 25,000 people. The plans were scrapped due to pushback from local politicians and activists on Amazon’s $3 billion tax incentives package, potential strain on the local infrastructure, and alleged mistreatment of its workers.
Interestingly, Austin was on the shortlist of locations to become the second headquarter.
At that time, Amazon also said that it would be building a 25,000-person campus in Virginia and a 5,000-person office in Nashville. And it said it would continue to grow its existing 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the U.S. and Canada. These hubs are located in the California Bay Area, New York City, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto, Phoenix, and Pittsburgh.
A company spokesperson told local press that the expansion in Austin was unrelated to it pulling out of New York, but that these plans have been in the works for years. Local news also reported that Amazon would not receive any financial incentives in opening its new facility in Austin.
