The U.S. Air Force (USAF) wants 400 Gb/s (400G) optical networking equipment as part of a network upgrade at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
The request notice was initially published by the Department of Defense (DOD) last month, and states a request for vendors willing to support a potential network upgrade for the 633rd Communications Squadron (633 CS).
Among the terms, the USAF specifically requests Cisco’s Network Convergence System (NCS) 2006 Series equipment, which would provide it the means to deploy a configurable dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) network. The military branch also wants 400G transponder modules, and both offerings must be suitable for use as part of the existing network infrastructure.
Contractors would also be required to provide “all” project management, personnel, labor, equipment, tools, and technical expertise to perform the installation and integration.
The USAF is limiting competition for this contract to firms registered under NAICS 541512 (Computer Systems Design Services) that qualify as small businesses, a designation requiring a firm’s average annual receipts over the last five years to be $34 million or less.
Final responses were requested by March 26, with a contract award anticipated around May 7.
The 633rd Communications Squadron designs and implements networks across the U.S. military’s war fighting missions. It supports approximately 440 DOD sites, providing communication across voice, data, air traffic, and industrial control.
