VMware confirmed a “limited number” of layoffs, but a company spokesperson declined to say how many or what percentage of employees would be affected. The virtualization giant also won’t say which business units will see job cuts.
“There have been a limited number of changes to our workforce this month,” a VMware spokesperson wrote in an email to SDxCentral. “This is a part of regular workforce rebalancing that ensures resources across VMware’s global businesses and geographies are aligned with strategic objectives and customer needs. We have an active employee support program to ensure, where possible, impacted employees will be redeployed to open roles within VMware. We continue to recruit in areas of strategic importance for the company.”
However, CRN reports that VMware laid off several hundred employees globally.
The VMware spokesperson also pointed out that there are “significantly more” job openings than layoffs this month. Specifically, VMware.com’s career page lists 1,250 openings.
“We are rebalancing some areas of our business to align to our top growth priorities, which resulted in some positions being eliminated,” the spokesperson added. “This is not uncommon in the fast-changing technology industry.”
The job cuts follow a massive VMware buying spree. VMware bought 10 companies over the past 12 months including Pivotal for $2.7 billion and Nyansa for an undisclosed amount.
