Data center server manufacturer Wiwynn announced a new edge platform for telecommunications operators based on the Open Compute Project (OCP) OpenEdge hardware specifications. The vendor also said it will contribute an open firmware development kit to the Nokia-led OCP project.

The new Edge Platform 100 (EP100) portfolio is built for 5G applications requiring low latency and huge data-processing capabilities at edge sites. “Wiwynn EP100 enables communication service providers to address diverse low-latency data processing demands of cloud RAN and modern central offices,” said Sunlai Chang, senior vice president and CTO of Wiwynn in a statement.

Wiwynn EP100 is a 3 rack-unit (U) edge system based on OCP OpenEdge. It supports up to five, 1U half-width servers and can configure with 2U half-width and 1U full-width server sleds. Service providers can also scale computing power by adding more EP100 systems for applications ranging from base stations to regional central offices.

Nokia launched its AirFrame open edge technology in April 2018 and donated the specifications to the OCP in March. OCP OpenEdge was one of five new projects announced at the most recent OCP Global Summit.

“Wiwynn’s contribution to OCP OpenEdge is an important step forward in the creation of a healthy ecosystem and providing far edge data center equipment consumers with multi-source procurement options to avoid vendor lock-in,” said Hannu Nikurautio, head of cloud RAN product management of Nokia, in a statement.

In addition to its work with OpenEdge, Wiwynn is also developing a software stack with OpenRMC (stands for “rack management module”), OpenBMC (baseboard management controller), and OSF (open system firmware) to improvement management of the open system.

The new edge platform comes as telecommunications companies are increasingly adopting OCP gear.

According to IHS Markit’s most recent OCP market forecast, 2018 non-board OCP revenue beat the 2017 forecast, reaching $2.56 billion, compared to a forecast of $1.84 billion, with year-over-year growth of 120%.

By 2022, non-board OCP revenue share is expected to $10.7 billion. Servers, storage and networking are the fastest projected growth categories, and telco spend is expected to surpass that of hyperscalers by 2021.
