VMware announced today it is stabling its VeloCloud SD-WAN in Equinix's data centers. The networking vendor will offer its SD-WAN offering as a virtual network function (VNF) on the colocation provider's Network Edge platform.

The partnership expands the reach of VMware's SD-WAN and secure access service edge (SASE) offering to Equinix's 205 data centers. VMware will also extend its presence in Equinix's International Business Exchange data centers across the Americas, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East.

The service enables VeloCloud customers to take more control over their peering relationships with cloud service providers. This will allow customers to more efficiently link the services. The relationship also dramatically expands VMware's SASE footprint, allowing enterprises to provision additional security and remote access services from Equinix data centers using the company's Cloud Exchange Fabric.

Together, the companies claim the offering will help enterprises enhance application performance for remote workers through a cost-effective opex model.

"With VMware SD-WAN edge now available as a virtual network service on Equinix's Network Edge, enterprises, partners, and service providers alike will be able to have unique, globally available network solutions optimized for intrinsically secure access to any public, private, or [software-as-a-service] cloud or remote and branch users," said Sanjay Uppal, SVP and GM of the VeloCloud business unit at VMware, in a statement.

VMware's relationship with Equinix dates back to 2013, when the companies began working together on hybrid-cloud deployments.

VMware is the latest SD-WAN vendor to offer its SD-WAN as a service running in Equinix data centers.

Early this year, Fortinet announced plans to offer its own Secure SD-WAN platform on the colocation provider's Network Edge platform. And in August, Cisco — which also partners with Equinix — expanded its colocation investments announcing a partnership with Megaport to interconnect cloud providers and services as part of a broader multi-cloud strategy.

Like Equinix's Network Edge platform, Cisco is offering its Viptela SD-WAN as a VNF on Megaport's Virtual Edge platform.
