VMware named Rangarajan (Raghu) Raghuram as its new CEO. Raghuram, the company’s current EVP and COO of products and cloud services, will move into his new chief executive role on June 1.

The virtualization giant also announced that Sanjay Poonen, VMware’s COO for customer operations, “made the personal decision” to leave VMware after seven years with the company. Both Raghuram and Poonen were considered frontrunners for the chief executive post.

Raghuram will replace Pat Gelsinger, who left VMware earlier this year to return to Intel as its CEO. During the interim, CFO Zane Rowe served as acting CEO.

Rowe will continue as CFO, and the VMware board appointed Sumit Dhawan as president. In this role he will leading all go-to-market functions sales, partnerships, customer experience, marketing, and communications. Dhawan currently serves as SVP and chief customer officer at VMware.

Raghuram joined VMware in 2003, and since then he helped drive the company’s core virtualization business as well as its software defined data center strategy and more recent cloud computing business.

Throughout his career, he has led with integrity and conviction, playing an instrumental role in the success of VMware,” Michael Dell, chairman of the VMware board of directors, said in a statement. “Raghu is now in position to architect VMware’s future, helping customers and partners accelerate their digital businesses in this multi-cloud world.”

VMware is also in the process of separating from parent company Dell Technologies.

VMware also today announced preliminary results for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2022. The company expects Q1 revenue to be $2.994 billion, an increase of 9.5% from the first quarter of fiscal 2021.

The combination of subscription and software-as-a-service, and license revenue is expected to be $1.387 billion, an increase of 12.5% from the first quarter of fiscal 2021. And net income per share is expected to be $1.76.
