Telefónica Business Solutions deployed a single instance of Nokia’s virtualized service router for the provider edge in its live international network.
Telefónica Business Solutions is the enterprise services unit of the Spanish service provider Telefónica. The parent company has a network functions virtualization (NFV) architecture dubbed Unica, and today’s news with Nokia is part of that.
In particular, Telefónica is augmenting its IP infrastructure with the deployment of a Nokia virtualized Provider Edge router (vPE). Nokia’s vPEs will allow Telefónica to increase its network reach with new points of presence (PoPs) to serve areas with lower customer density. And the vPEs will also help it accelerate deployment of enterprise virtual private network (VPN) services to new off-net sites.
The single deployment proves that Telefónica can rapidly configure vPEs.
The introduction of vPE routers will complement the deployment of existing Nokia physical service routers.
Telefónica has been working in its NFV Reference Implementation Lab with Nokia for some time to advance the availability of virtualized solutions.
Nokia’s vPEs can be installed in any country, per customer request.
