Sysdig introduced a Kubernetes cost-saving tool that is designed to reduce cloud service provider bills, and hilariously also runs in the cloud.

Kubernetes spending has been on the rise for the last few years. A recent survey from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and the FinOps Foundation showed that 68% of the respondents found their Kubernetes costs increased and half of them saw a cost jump of more than 20% during the past year. Meanwhile, 24% of the surveyed do not monitor Kubernetes spending and another 44% only rely on monthly estimates.

The Sysdig Cost Advisor tool feeds customers' cost, performance, and utilization data into a single tool for cost monitoring, while offering suggestions for potential savings and remediations. By allocating the Kubernetes cost to the right teams the company claims the Cost Advisor can reduce wasted resources by an average of 40%.

“Sysdig uses the information we get from our customers to tailor our recommendations and cost savings estimates around best practices and industry standards,” Harry Perks, principle product management at Sysdig, said in response to questions.

It also helps DevOps teams to be aware of the actual Kubernetes usage and costs and sends out spending spike alerts for cost monitoring and management while eliminating the need to buy a separate Kubernetes cost tool.

Cost Advisor will become part of the Sysdig Monitor service with no additional cost to users.

It will be available for Amazon Web Services (AWS) at launch, with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) support coming in the next few months, Perks explained.

Then, “customers will be able to slice and dice costs on a cluster-by-cluster basis to break down costs for either a specific cloud vendor or for applications that span multiple cloud providers,” he noted.
