Palo Alto Networks today said it will pay $670 million to acquire attack surface management vendor Expanse.
After the deal closes, Expanse co-founders Tim Junio and Matt Kraning will join Palo Alto Networks.
Expanse, an 8-year-old security startup based in San Francisco, developed an internet collection and attribution platform that monitors the global internet and maps exposed and untracked assets that comprise customers’ attack surfaces. Additionally, the platform evaluates and prioritizes risk, and then mitigates the threats.
The company counts the U.S. Department of Defense, CVS Health, Allergan, PayPal, Accenture, Orrick, Lockheed Martin, and the U.S. Department of Energy as customers. It raised a total of $136 million in four funding rounds.
Expanse + Cortex XDRPalo Alto Networks plan to integrate Expanse with its Cortex product suite, its artificial intelligence-based detection, prevention, and automation portfolio that includes its Cortex XDR platform for extended detection and response. The combined technology will allow security operations teams to stitch together external, internal, and threat data to provide a more complete view of an enterprise’s threat landscape, Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora said in a statement.
“By integrating Expanse’s attack surface management capabilities into Cortex after closing, we will be able to offer the first solution that combines the outside view of an organization’s attack surface with an inside view to proactively address all security threats,” he said. “We believe this will be a game changer in security operations.”
Expanse is the latest Palo Alto Networks’ multi-million-dollar purchase, and its 10th acquisition in two years. In September, it closed a $265 million deal to acquire Crypsis Group, an incident response, risk management, and digital forensics consulting firm. As with Expanse, Palo Alto Networks bought Crypsis to boost its Cortex XDR platform.
And in April, it bought SD-WAN vendor CloudGenix for $420 million to add that networking piece into its secure access service edge (SASE) platform.
