Japanese telecom giant NTT West Group tapped Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE) GreenLake platform and Microsoft's Azure public cloud to provide hybrid cloud services to local organizations across western Japan.

The move is part of NTT's Regional Revitalization Cloud program, which aims to help regional governments, educational institutions, and businesses accelerate their digital transformation. It is based on a regional information integration platform that includes NTT’s various technologies, regional data centers, and other support services and facilities.

Under the new hybrid-cloud partnership with HPE and Microsoft, NTT West will deploy HPE's GreenLake platform on HPE ProLiant for Azure Stack Hub — an integrated Microsoft Azure Stack hybrid cloud that lets customers run Azure services on-premises, in their own data centers or colocation facilities.

In addition, NTT West will help customers select which applications, workloads, and data should move to the public cloud. The hybrid-cloud services can also analyze and process customer data on the Azure public cloud while securely storing other data in local data centers.

The group has already launched the cloud services in three regions and plans to roll it out in individual data centers across 30 different prefectures of western Japan.

GreenLake Accommodates Different Requirements, Budgets

For the hybrid cloud experience, NTT West chose HPE services to “run data and applications that cannot be deployed in the public cloud due to security constraints,” HPE Japan managing director Hirokazu Mochizuki said in a statement.

Additionally, customers can transfer applications that were initially designed to run in the public cloud to the Regional Revitalization Cloud program's data centers under GreenLake's pay-per-usage, software-as-a-service model.

“HPE GreenLake allows us to pay for what we use so we can accurately match our costs to revenue and we can invest efficiently to expand the regional revitalization cloud,” said Hidenori Kigami, executive officer of value design at NTT Business Solutions, in a statement. “We have selected the HPE GreenLake platform because it accelerates our customers’ digital transformation and quickly scales performance and capacity to meet our customers’ business demands.”

The GreenLake portfolio is HPE’s consumption-based cloud services including compute, container management, data protection, machine learning operations, networking, storage, and virtual desktop infrastructure offerings.

The platform has grown to $5.7 billion in total contract value, with more than 900 partners and 1,250 enterprise customers across 50 countries in all industry sectors and sizes, according to HPE.
