Microsoft is acquiring cloud migration firm Movere in a move that bolsters its march on public cloud leader Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Movere’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology supports organizations as they migrate operations to the cloud. It includes a discovery component that asses the use and location of an enterprise’s infrastructure and applications; plans out a migration strategy based on resource and consumption use; provides detailed resource consumption information; figures out what applications need to modernized, consolidated, or rationalized across all hardware and devices; and identifies security gaps. That technology has garnered competency status from both Microsoft Azure and AWS.

Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Jeremy Winter, partner director for Microsoft’s Azure Management, said Movere will complement its Azure Migrate platform and the cloud provider’s integrated partner offerings. “We believe that successful cloud migrations enable business transformation and this acquisition underscores our investments to make that happen,” Winter wrote in a blog post.

Movere last year changed its name from Unified Logic to what had been its main product offering as part of a corporate overhaul. The firm, which is based near Microsoft in Bellevue, Washington, counts 21st Century Fox, AT&T, IBM, and McDonald’s as customers.

Cloud providers are increasingly targeting migration tools.

Google recently announced the beta launch of its Kubernetes-based Migrate for Anthos service. The offering allows users to take a virtual machine (VM) from on-premises or Google Compute Engine (GCE) and move it directly into containers running in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). Those VMs can also be migrated directly from AWS’ EC2 and Microsoft Azure into containers running in GKE.

The migration tool was initially unveiled alongside the Anthos launch at the Google Next event earlier this year. Anthos is a Kubernetes-based platform that is fully-managed by Google.

IBM last year enhanced the migration capabilities of its Cloud Migration Factory platform to include deep insight algorithms designed to improve planning accuracy and reduce migration risks by uncovering potential challenges earlier in the process. The vendor had previously joined a similar push by Docker Inc. and its Modernize Traditional Application (MTA) program.

Microsoft’s cloud business has been making steady strides in gaining ground on market heavyweight AWS.

A recent Gartner report noted that Microsoft posted $5 billion in worldwide infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) revenue last year, which was a 60.9% increase compared to the previous year.

A different report from Synergy Research Group also pointed to Microsoft’s robust growth in the market. “Amazon is maintaining its leadership position in the market though growth at Microsoft is also noteworthy,” noted John Dinsdale, chief analyst at Synergy Research Group, in the report. “In early 2016, Microsoft was less than a quarter the size of Amazon in this market while today it is getting close to being half the size.”
