As enterprises move their services to external clouds, they’re faced with losing visibility into their networks, says Ulrica de Fort-Menares, vice president of product strategy at LiveAction. Software-based LiveUX provides network management teams and IT professionals visibility into unmanaged, cloud-based SaaS applications from the data center down to the end-user.
“For years we’ve been doing monitoring of network infrastructure, but we want to extend that to give our customers visibility as they leverage SaaS applications,” Fort-Menares says. “Not only do we want to give them visibility into this unmanaged network – we also want to give them more insight into what the end-users see.”
LiveUX deploys its agents as closely as possible to the users as part of establishing a baseline for a SaaS offering. The agents act as though they are virtual users within a network, which gives the network operators a view of the user experience.
“Once you have the baseline, you can tell when there’s a deviation from normal and start to alert the network operators,” Fort-Menares says. LiveUX’s agents let network operators know if the application performance issues are widespread or affecting only certain parts of a network.
The free version of LiveUX includes up to three global agents, three private agents, and five tests per agent performed at five-minute intervals, with historical data being stored for up to 24 hours. Testing includes full HTTP tests, as well as tests for DNS latency, ICMP ping for network latency, and TCP traceroute for hop-by-hop segmentation of performance characteristics.
LiveUX can run tests against applications from either the LiveUX hosted global agents or from a downloadable private agent that is deployed on-premises, which allows network engineers to test applications from any location over any network. While LiveUX is a freemium model, the on-premises version is for pay.
LiveAction also announced that it will release its LiveAction 5.1 software next month. LiveAction 5.1 will expand support for sFlow in Cisco’s Nexus 9000 switches as well as adding QoS configuration support for Cisco’s 3850 and 4500 switches.
LiveAction is a recommended tool for Cisco’s SD-WAN offering, called IWAN; and 5.1 will include additional features for IWAN deployments. In the IWAN setting, Cisco uses its software to detect policy issues when traffic is re-routed, Fort-Menares says.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based LiveAction was spun off from Referentia Systems in 2007. Prior to the spinoff, the Department of Defense was using the software in combat zones to provide military personnel visibility into their networks via a GUI.
The company was called ActionPacked after the spinoff, before changing the name to LiveAction last year. LiveAction’s first product launch was in 2011. Its competitors include Riverbed Technologies and SolarWinds.
In September of last year, LiveAction garnered $5.35 million in Series A funding. AITV led the investment round with participation from Cisco Investments and Enerdigm Ventures.
