2023 has been a good year for Extreme Networks.

The networking vendor reported its fourth quarter and full-year fiscal 2023 financial results on Aug. 2, outperforming the company's original top-line outlook for the year. For the fourth quarter, Extreme reported revenue of $363.9 million, which was up 31% year over year. Full-year revenue came in at $1.3 billion, up 18% from fiscal 2022.

The fourth quarter was a busy one for Extreme, with the company announcing its ExtremeCloud Edge platform for network connectivity in edge deployments, a new Wi-Fi 6E access point and a trio of new enterprise switches with its 7520, 7720 and 8820 hardware platforms.

"We outperformed our original top-line outlook for fiscal 2023, and based on industry analysts, estimates outgrew the market by two times," Ed Meyercord, CEO of Extreme Networks said during his company's earnings call. "This, combined with the increase in volume of larger deals and new logos, is a clear indication that we’re taking share from our largest competitors "

The Extreme portfolio is moving in 'One' direction

The direction that Extreme has been taking in recent months is to build out a unified approach across its core networking and cloud capabilities.

Meyercord said Extreme has a “One Network” approach that helps to differentiate it against rivals, and makes it easier for customers to adopt.

"At the core of our One Network promise is our universal hardware portfolio," he said. "With Extreme’s unique and highly differentiated fabric, we make it simple to orchestrate applications and policy across the entire campus — from the core to the wireless edge and across the wide area network."

A critical part of Extreme's portfolio now is the company's AIOps capabilities, which bring the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help optimize network operations. Meyercord said Extreme's AIOps capabilities provide proactive insights and analytics to improve network availability and management.

"Customers increasingly view their network as a strategic asset to streamline operations and power, scale new services and reduce business risk," Meyercord said. "Our AIOps solutions are getting traction with customers as they look for new ways to leverage the network to drive better business outcomes. This is evidenced by the 182 customers that spent over $1 million with Extreme in fiscal 2023. "

Customer wins continue to boost Extreme reputation

Meyercord also used his company's earnings call as an opportunity to highlight the big customer names won by the company.

"As enterprise customers are looking to upgrade their networks, they’re considering Extreme now more than ever before and people are surprised to learn about the kinds of customer relationships that we have," he said.

Extreme has had particular success helping professional sports teams meet networking requirements with both wireless and wired technologies. Meyercord noted that Extreme has expanded its footprint within MLB (Major League Baseball) and the NHL (National Hockey League), winning new deals with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Flyers.

Meyercord said the big-name customer wins help to improve Extreme's reputation, which in turn often leads to more opportunities.

"Enterprise customers are surprised to learn that, every time you get a FedEx package, it’s run through an Extreme network. Or every time you fly in the U.S. airspace, you’re flying on an Extreme network technically because the FAA runs on Extreme," he said. "These kinds of stories are becoming more and more known in the industry."
