AT&T and Tech Mahindra are sponsoring an open source competition that seeks innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The contest encourages participation from students, developers, and data scientists. The sponsors will work with the Linux Foundation to host the Acumos AI Challenge.
The Linux Foundation already hosts the Acumos AI open source project that aims to build, share, and use AI applications. The Linux Foundation hosts Acumos AI under its LF Deep Learning Foundation.
AT&T and Tech Mahindra announced in October 2017 that they were developing an AI and machine learning platform that later became the Acumos AI project.
The Acumos AI project also includes a free Acumos Marketplace that packages various components as microservices and allows users to export AI applications as containers to run in public clouds or private environments. All eligible AI solutions created by contestants in the Acumos AI Challenge will be available as open source in the Acumos Marketplace.
AT&T and Tech Mahindra are awarding $100,000 in prizes, as well as the chance for finalists to travel to San Francisco to pitch their solutions during the finals on September 11, 2018.
“We created the Acumos AI Challenge to recognize developers who are paving the future of AI development and helping to accelerate AI adoption and innovation,” said Mazin Gilbert, VP of advanced technology at AT&T, in a statement.
Perhaps the fact that AI talent is hard to find is also playing into this initiative. It’s been widely reported that AI developers are almost impossible to find, and the big webscalers are luring all the available talent.
The Acumos AI Challenge is seeking AI solutions across all uses cases. Examples include, but are not limited to:
The top three teams will each receive $25,000 plus a trip to the finals in San Francisco in September. The team that wins the finale will take home an additional $25,000 grand prize, for a total of $50,000.
