Cisco to slash more jobs, merge networking unit
Cisco is pushing a new corporate restructuring initiative that will see long-time networking chief Jonathan Davidson exit, his former division merged into the vendor’s security and collaboration teams, and the elimination of around 7% of the vendor’s workforce.
The latest restructure was announced as part of Cisco’s latest earnings release. During the accompanying earnings call, CEO Chuck Robbins highlighted Cisco’s progress in integrating its $28 billion Splunk acquisition, its progress in developing a more robust artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, and the continued growth of its cloud platforms.

Cisco introduced the Nexus HyperFabric AI cluster solution, co-developed with Nvidia, aiming to simplify the deployment and management of AI infrastructure for enterprises using Ethernet networks, at this week’s Cisco Live 2024.
The cloud-managed data center network solution combines Cisco’s AI-native networking and Ethernet switching expertise with Nvidia accelerated computing and AI software and VAST data storage capabilities. It aims to offer a single place to design, order, deploy, validate, monitor, assure, and optimize all the AI pods and data center workloads.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan touts VMware’s private cloud, AI future
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan metaphorically completed the takeover of VMware at this week’s VMware Explore event, taking the keynote stage to tout Broadcom’s progress in integrating VMware since the deal closed 9 months ago and claiming VMware’s future is in private cloud and AI.
Tan’s first round of business was to state in no uncertain terms that VMware was now a business and not whatever it was before that allowed it to grow into something Broadcom needed to spend nearly $70 billion to acquire.
