Databricks' $1.3 billion acquisition of Mosaic tops the money moves in July, proving that companies with an AI pedigree are enjoying soaring valuations. In other billion-dollar-acquisition news, asset management firm TPG did Databricks a billion dollars better,  reaching into its coffers to fund a $2.45 billion deal to buy Forcepoint‘s Global Governments and Critical Infrastructure (G2CI) business from Francisco Partners.

Even though we're hitting the dog days of summer, there was no lack of other money moves in July, as you'll see below. If you’d like SDxCentral to report on your company’s VC, M&A or other financial activity in our monthly Money Moves section, or if you have any tips on that activity, please send the information to Dan Muse ([email protected]).

Why Databricks is betting a cool $1.3B on MosaicML Databricks is betting big-time that generative AI will continue to be the most strategic development in IT since the dawn of the cloud. Investors in MosaicML, a 2-year-old, under-the-radar San Francisco startup that Databricks bought last month, will rake in some serious cas. MosaicML makes a generative AI platform using machine learning that enables users to train and deploy custom AI models with their own data.

“The Databricks-MosaicML merger is a sign of the growing importance of generative AI,” said Mike Gualtieri, principal analyst at Forrester Research. “These technologies are becoming increasingly powerful and versatile, and they are being used in a wide range of applications. This deal will help Databricks to stay ahead of the curve in the generative AI market.”

TPG scoops up Forcepoint’s government business for $2.45B Asset management firm TPG struck a $2.45 billion deal to acquire security company Forcepoint‘s Global Governments and Critical Infrastructure (G2CI) business from Francisco Partners. As part of the transaction, Forcepoint’s G2CI business will be separated from the company’s Commercial business as an independent entity backed by TPG, while Francisco Partners will retain a minority interest in G2CI.

Forcepoint’s Commercial and G2CI business units have been operating as standalone entities since early 2021, with a Forcepoint spokesperson explaining to SDxCentral via email that the vendor doesn’t expect the deal to “have material impact to customer services, product delivery or operations as a result.”
