Video: Introducing Brocade New IP Video with Christine Heckart, Brocade CMO
Matt Palmer recently had the chance to talk with Brocade CMO Christine Heckart, a networking veteran and long-time friend, about Brocade New IP, an important concept transforming networking today, and how it will shape businesses in the future.
Heckart describes Brocade New IP at its most basic as the evolution underway that will bring networking into the virtualized and cloud era. As Heckart and I discuss in this video, the Brocade New IP is not just about an exciting new network architecture for IT folks. It’s a platform that will help spur innovation, better serve customers, and drive organizations forward.
To understand the Brocade New IP, it helps to contrast it against the Old IP. Old IP networks are characterized by hardware-centric platforms, vendor-driven systems, and closed and proprietary components. While the Old IP was instrumental in building out the Internet, Heckart said it is falling far short of meeting the needs of the “third platform” – technologies like cloud, social media, mobile, and big data that are rapidly shaping the IT landscape today. “We’re seeing the cracks in the foundation every day,” she said.
According to Heckart, 80 percent of the money spent in IT today goes toward maintaining the existing IP network, leaving little time and limited resources for innovation – a scenario that becomes an increasing liability as network demands of the third platform grow in leaps and bounds.
NewIP is open and software-driven – a setup inherently designed to foster innovation and experimentation. “Look at the cloud providers and how rapidly they’ve moved ahead because they can innovate quickly,” Heckart said. “They can launch new services so quickly, and yet enterprises are hamstrung.”
